Being immersed in the industry of welding, chemicals and gases, we understand that there are hazards in every day work. Safety is the most important thing to consider in one’s every day routine. Here are four areas to pay particular attention to in the welding workplace.

Electric shock
The most serious and immediate risk that faces a welder is electric shock, which can lead to severe injuries. This can occur when a welder inserts his or her hand between two metal objects that have voltage between them. The electric current will then pass through the body of the welder and could lead to injuries, a fall from the shock or even death.
Fumes and gases
Overexposure to welding fumes can be very hazardous to one’s health because of harmful metal oxide compounds. It is essential to keep the work area well ventilated and/or use exhaust to control any fumes.
Fire and explosions
Welding consists of hot equipment and working with flammable materials can create a hazardous environment. It is best to keep flammable materials away from welding practices, but also keep fire-resistant material and extinguishers near the work place at all times.
Insufficient personal protective equipment
The correct PPE (personal protective equipment) allows for adequate protection from welding hazards as well as mobility to complete tasks in the workplace. Wearing the right type of clothing is not always the most beneficial for welding activities. Extra steps like helmets, gloves, specific eye protection and earplugs are crucial to preventing injuries and accidents in the workplace.
Many of these accidents or incidents can be prevented by a few simple steps:
· Keeping your workstation clean and up to standards
· Understanding both the material and the machinery that you are working with
· Carefully reviewing data sheets
· Following correct safety procedures
· Awareness and education of common welding hazards and how to avoid them
· Understanding of emergency and safety procedures for when there is an incident
