Nitrogen is a common element, estimated at about seventh in total abundance in our galaxy and the solar system and is non-flammable, colorless, odorless & tasteless. It is used for chromatography and the purging of pipes. Nitrogen is often mixed with other gases for industrial work. Nitrogen may be utilized in its pure form, or mixed with carbon dioxide to preserve the freshness of packaged or bulk foods. In ordinary incandescent light bulbs, nitrogen is utilized as an inexpensive alternative to argon. Nitrogen can also be used for filling automotive and aircraft tires due to its inertness and lack of moisture. Nitrogen tanks are also replacing carbon dioxide as the main power source for paintball guns.

Like dry ice, the main use of liquid nitrogen is as a refrigerant. Nitrogen can also be used to preserve blood, cells and other biologic samples and in the removal of warts and other bumps on the skin.
