Propane fuel has a number of household uses from outdoor grills to heating your home. While propane is safer than gasoline, it still needs to be treated with care. They are equipped with a variety of safety features, but as a consumer, there are a number of guidelines that need to be followed for propane tank safety.
General propane tank safety
First, and probably most importantly, you should never try to alter or modify your propane tank whether it be a small tank for your grill or large tank that supplies for you home heating and cooking needs. Propane tanks have safety features built-in to keep you and your family safe. A propane leak can pose a very dangerous situation of explosion or fire as well as the potential to cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. As propane gas is odorless in its natural state, an additive is used to give propane gas a very unpleasant odor that will alert you to even the smallest leak. If you do smell “gas”, extinguish any open flames, avoid touching any object that could create a spark, evacuate the area and notify a professional that can find and stop the leak. Never tamper with supply lines, safety devices or regulators, leave any propane tank repairs or maintenance to the experts on propane tank safety.
Propane tank safety for your home
Leaks are the most common problem associated with propane tanks. Propane gas is infused with a sulfur scent that will alert you to a potential leak. If you suspect a leak in your home, evacuate the area immediately, do not try searching for the source of the leak, and do not turn lights or any other electrical appliance on or off. When digging on your property be sure to contact your supplier before you dig to be sure that you will not damage them and cause a potentially dangerous situation. You also want to be sure to keep any propane-powered appliances clean. This means having your furnace, hot water tank and/or stove inspected and serviced regularly to avoid any problems and ensue proper propane tank safety.
Propane tank safety for your outdoor cooking
When using your outdoor propane grille, barbeque, or cooktop it is very important to keep the area open and well ventilated. Always keep the cylinder in an upright position and keep it clear of dry grass, leaves, and other flammable debris. Never use your grille or other outdoor cooking vessel as a heater and never leave cooking food unattended. When not in use, always turn the tank off and always make sure that all appliances are turned off. Each time you open the tank for use, listen carefully for any hissing, and be aware to any sulfur smell that may indicate the presence of a leak. For an added measure of propane tank safety, a leak-detection solution can be purchased from your propane tank supplier and used regularly or as needed. Avoid smoking when in close proximity to the propane tank and do not allow children to play near or tamper with it. If you ever have a concern with a propane tank you are using for outdoor cooking, disconnect it and contact your propane supplier.
Whether you use propane gas to heat your home or grill a great steak in the backyard, propane tank safety is a priority. While propane in many ways is safer than natural gas, it can also be as dangerous. By following the guidelines above, you can enjoy the convenience and efficiency of propane in your daily life.
