The lightsaber is a weapon of sci-fi fantasy. In honor of “May the Forth”, a.k.a. Star Wars Day, we are going to take a look at this iconic weapon and see what we use today that is similar to a Star Wars Lightsaber.
Just like pencil lead, tin foil, and shooting stars, the name for the lightsaber is a misnomer, meaning that none of these things actually contain the material that they are named for. So, what this means is that when using a lightsaber, you’re not actually fighting with light. Instead, you would most likely be using a powerful arc of plasma, which can be controlled with magnetic fields and electrical arcs.
Aside from electrically charged plasma arcs, we use “beams” of superheated plasma in production factories for cutting the metal used to build everyday products. This “beam” is actually a plasma arc cutter/torch/welder/sprayer which resembles a lightsaber, but in a very miniature version. The difference between a lighsaber and a plasma cutter is a plasma cutter would never be able to reach beyond six inches and if it could, the “blade” wouldn’t be able to retain its rigidity.
