Welding has a basic function of practicality and is built on, well, building. However, the art of welding is in fact just that: an art. Over thousands of years people have depended on welders for basic necessities but also to evolve many different industries. Welding is more than just a craft, but true craftsmanship. Some of the most famous structures in the world are standing today thanks to the execution and art of welding.
Inside the Cloud Gate
Representing the Windy City of Chicago, the Cloud Gate stands 33 feet high and 66 feet long. Inspired by the look of liquid mercury, the Cloud Gate is nicknamed “the bean” for its resemblance in shape to the legume. Even though the Cloud Gate has a seamless and flawless finish, the majority of the welding masterwork took place within the support system underneath the polished plates. After 5 years of welding work, the mirror-like Cloud Gate was unveiled in 2006 for all the world to marvel..jpg)
Behind Disney’s Spaceship Earth
At the beginning of Walt Disney World, Spaceship Earth stood as the second tallest structure at 182 feet. The Epcot attraction was designed to symbolize “bringing the world together through technology.” This rang true to the construction of the sphere. This task was an engineering difficulty. Not only was the sphere challenging to construct but raising the entire structure 20 feet off the ground was also quite daunting. Most people would not know that Spaceship Earth was comprised of three different sections all engineered separately from each other: the sphere structure, the ride itself and the utility structure. The enormity and complexity of Spaceship Earth earned the iconic symbol the honor as one of the top engineering projects of the year by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
